There was a 5K, 6K and combination 10K walk. The walk through the Mare Islands wetlands was just that - wet. It was a "Fun in the rain" kind of walk! The rain held off for most of Saturday morning, but arrived in late morning to make the walk more interesting! Sunday the sun came out and made for a more confortable, although soggy walk. Mare Island consists of 5,657 acres, including 3,075 acres of tidal and non-tidal wetlands that provide habitat for many wetland dependent species, including the endangered salt marsh harvest mouse. The area of the wetlands walk is not normally opened to the general public, but was opened for the Flyway Festival. The walk continued to the Napa River bridge, which provided a great view of the Napa River. Continuing the streets tour took walkers along "Captain's Row", an outstanding array of turn-of-the-century mansions undergoing restoration, including the Admiral's Mansion. Continuing on, walkers came to St. Peters Chapel, now the oldest naval chapel. Dedicated in October, 1901, the chapel is non-denominational and houses the most Tiffany stained-glass in a single site west of the Mississippi. Sixteen of the stained-glass memorial panes are signed Tiffany Studio works and the other stained glass windows in the Chapel are designed by Tiffany.
